Background of the Study :
Effective communication in university lectures is crucial for knowledge dissemination. In Nigeria, university lectures are evolving with curriculum reforms and the integration of digital tools. Syntactic efficiency—characterized by clear sentence structures, effective clause coordination, and cohesive devices—ensures that complex ideas are conveyed succinctly. This study investigates syntactic efficiency in Nigerian university lectures, focusing on how curriculum changes and digital transformation have influenced lecture delivery. By analyzing lecture transcripts and recordings, the research aims to determine the extent to which instructors simplify or modify syntactic structures to enhance student comprehension (Olawale, 2023). Factors such as language proficiency, teaching methodology, and technological tools are examined to assess their impact on syntactic clarity. The findings will help identify best practices in lecture communication and contribute to improved educational outcomes. This study is particularly relevant in a multilingual academic environment where clarity and efficiency are paramount (Nwankwo, 2024).
Statement of the Problem :
Although effective lecture delivery is essential for academic success, there is limited research on the syntactic efficiency of Nigerian university lectures. Existing studies often focus on curriculum content and pedagogical methods without addressing the linguistic structures that facilitate comprehension. This gap hampers efforts to improve lecture quality, as instructors may not be aware of how syntactic modifications can enhance clarity. Without systematic analysis of syntactic patterns, strategies to optimize communication in diverse classrooms remain underdeveloped, affecting student engagement and learning outcomes (Olawale, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To analyze syntactic structures in Nigerian university lectures.
To evaluate the impact of curriculum reforms on lecture syntax.
To propose strategies for enhancing syntactic efficiency.
Research Questions:
What are the prevalent syntactic features in lecture delivery?
How do curriculum changes affect syntactic efficiency?
What improvements can enhance student comprehension?
Significance of the Study :
This study informs educators and curriculum developers by revealing the role of syntax in effective lecture delivery. Its findings will enhance academic communication and improve educational practices in Nigerian universities (Olawale, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study focuses on syntactic efficiency in university lectures and does not cover other forms of academic communication.
Definitions of Terms:
Syntactic Efficiency: The clarity and conciseness of sentence construction.
